International Communications

Taking Saudi Arabia’s Investment Story Global

Building relevance across international markets

A strong national investment proposition does not automatically translate into a strong international story.

Different markets interpret opportunity differently. Investors respond to different priorities, media environments vary considerably, and policy announcements that resonate domestically may require an entirely different communications approach internationally.

This was the challenge behind 8Ball’s work supporting the Ministry of Investment of Saudi Arabia.

MISA needed to strengthen its message in international markets, increase the visibility of Saudi Arabia’s investment proposition and help mobilise investor interest around the Kingdom’s rapidly evolving economic story.

The answer was not simply greater volume.

It required greater relevance.

One investment story. Multiple international audiences.

The strategy centred on developing market-specific messages designed to resonate with different international audiences.

Rather than treating global communications as a single campaign translated across territories, the approach considered what each audience needed to understand about Saudi Arabia.

That included the investment environment, major policy developments, economic transformation and the opportunities emerging across sectors.

International media engagement was supported by market-specific social campaigns and communications around major policy initiatives, including the new investment law.

Branding, visual storytelling and video content were used to create a more coherent and recognisable investment narrative across channels.

The underlying principle was simple:

International communications must be designed for the audience receiving the message.

Translation alone is not enough.

Creating new reference points for Saudi investment

A significant part of global reputation-building is establishing the ideas and messages that international audiences begin to associate with a country.

For Saudi Arabia, this meant moving beyond established perceptions and creating new reference points around investment, economic transformation, policy reform and future opportunity.

International media coverage played an important role, but so did consistency.

The same strategic investment narrative had to remain recognisable across media, social channels, policy communications and visual content while still being adapted for individual markets.

The result was a stronger international communications presence for MISA, Invest Saudi and Saudi Arabia’s wider investment proposition.

Global communications requires local understanding

There is a tendency to think of international communications as a distribution challenge: take a message created in one market and push it into another.

The reality is more complex.

Successful international positioning requires an understanding of how investors think, how media narratives form and how national priorities intersect with the interests of different markets.

Saudi Arabia’s investment transformation created an extraordinary amount of material to communicate.

The challenge was ensuring that international audiences understood what that transformation meant for them.

That is the difference between sending a message globally and building a global narrative.
